A home wellness room is a sanctuary for relaxation, balance, and self-care. But to keep that calm and restorative atmosphere, the space needs regular attention – especially when the seasons change. Moisture, warmth, and essential oils can create conditions where dust, limescale, and bacteria thrive, affecting both air quality and the overall experience. Here’s a guide to seasonal cleaning that will help you maintain fresh and healthy air in your wellness room.

Begin with Fresh Air and Ventilation

The first step in any deep clean is to let in fresh air. Open windows and doors to create a cross-breeze that removes humidity and lingering scents from saunas, steam rooms, or hot tubs. If your wellness room doesn’t have windows, use a dehumidifier or fan to circulate the air.

Good ventilation is key to a healthy indoor climate. If you have an extractor fan or air filtration system, clean or replace the filters regularly. This ensures that the air circulating in the room is clean and free from dust and allergens.

Clean Surfaces and Grout Thoroughly

Damp environments are ideal for mould and bacteria, particularly in grout lines and corners. Use a mild cleaning solution with white vinegar or an eco-friendly cleaner to scrub tiles, walls, and floors. Avoid heavily perfumed products, as they can leave chemical residues that affect air quality.

  • Tiles and grout: Use a soft brush to reach into the grout. If you notice dark spots, treat them with a paste of bicarbonate of soda and water.
  • Wooden surfaces: In saunas or steam areas, wipe wood with a damp cloth and, if needed, a specialist sauna cleaner. Avoid soaking the wood, as excess water can cause damage.
  • Glass and mirrors: A mix of water and a splash of vinegar removes limescale and smudges without leaving chemical traces in the air.

Give the Spa or Hot Tub a Deep Clean

If your wellness room includes a spa or whirlpool bath, it’s important to clean the internal system. Fill the tub with warm water, add a spa cleaning solution, and run the jets for 10–15 minutes. Then drain and rinse thoroughly with clean water.

Clean the jets, filters, and drains as well. Limescale and soap residue can build up quickly, leading to unpleasant odours. Regular descaling not only keeps the air fresh but also extends the life of your equipment.

Refresh Textiles and Scent Sources

Towels, robes, and bath mats should be washed at high temperatures to remove bacteria and moisture. If you use scented candles, essential oils, or incense, remember that they can leave particles in the air. Rotate your scent sources regularly and choose natural, non-synthetic products.

A simple trick is to place a small bowl of bicarbonate of soda or activated charcoal in the room – both absorb moisture and neutralise odours naturally.

Monitor Humidity and Temperature

A wellness room should feel warm and slightly humid, but not excessively so. Use a hygrometer to measure humidity levels – ideally between 40 and 60 per cent. If the air becomes too damp, it can lead to mould and a heavy atmosphere.

After each use, leave the door open to allow the room to dry completely. This prevents moisture from settling into walls and fixtures.

Establish a Maintenance Routine

Seasonal cleaning is the perfect opportunity to give your wellness room a full refresh, but small daily habits make the biggest difference. Wipe down surfaces after use, rinse the spa regularly, and air out the room every day. These simple steps help preserve both the air quality and the tranquil atmosphere that make your wellness space so special.

Caring for your wellness room is also a way of caring for yourself. Clean air, fresh surfaces, and a balanced indoor climate are the foundation of true wellbeing – all year round.
