Look, Smell, and Feel – The First Signs

- Dark patches or stains on walls, ceilings, or around windows may indicate damp or early mould growth.
- Peeling paint or wallpaper that bubbles or lifts suggests moisture behind the surface.

- Remove the plastic and check for condensation.
If moisture appears on the underside of the plastic, it’s coming from the wall or floor – a sign that the material itself is damp. If it’s on the outer side, the room’s air is too humid.
Check Windows and Cold Spots
Condensation on the inside of windows is a clear sign that humidity is too high or that the windows are poorly insulated. This is most common in winter, when warm indoor air meets cold glass.
You can also feel for cold spots – areas of wall that are noticeably cooler than their surroundings. These “cold bridges” are places where damp is more likely to settle, and mould often appears there first.
